Detailed Nomination

Churchill Downs is built on lasting traditions and extraordinary visitor experiences. The world’s most legendary racetrack has conducted the Kentucky Derby since 1875. We do not take the responsibility of creating new traditions at Churchill Downs lightly, so we have worked closely with their curator to better understand the rich history of the brand.

In 2024, Churchill Downs celebrated the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. This year’s milestone event saw the unveiling of the $200 million Paddock redesign. After peeling back the layers of decades of renovations, the new design enhances the visibility of the iconic Twin Spires and restores much of its original character.

Populous and Churchill Downs worked in concert for nearly three years through the design and construction phase of the Paddock Renovation, transforming the space to be more impactful and memorable for racing fans and bystanders alike. The renovation, which expanded the Paddock from 5,000 sq. feet to over 12,000 sq. feet to accommodate twice as many guests, is the heart of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby.

By more than doubling the square footage of the Paddock, the new design reduces congestion upon entry and streamlines how guests travel through the space. As guests enter the track’s monumental front gates, they are greeted with a grand view of the Twin Spires. The horse stalls were relocated to a more visible and prominent location, adding more vantage points for viewing the horses and jockeys. Improved patron circulation paths now provide access to over two dozen different types of ticketed hospitality experiences and amenities at varied price points, allowing guests to customize their derby day visits.

A new Paddock grandstand, three-story premium seating, and standing-room-only areas increase patron viewing opportunities, while 4 new large LED video displays enhance views of the races and pageantry. The renovations also transformed the Paddock experience by adding ultra-premium spaces to enjoy race days like the Woodford Reserve Paddock Club, which provides access to the Paddock through an underground tunnel.

The Woodford Reserve Paddock Club takes on a refined aesthetic with large wood beams juxtaposed against inlaid ceiling panels of glistening brass wire fabric. Woodford Reserve distilling pots and barrel casks hint at the Speak Easy downstairs. Hand painted sign replicas provide wayfinding to escort guests.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted with a concierge service to escort them to their seat and enjoy an all-inclusive food and beverage experience. From their seats, guests have direct views of the paddock as the horses and jockeys make their way to the track. Private bourbon tastings are available at the cellar with bottles that are exclusive to Churchill Downs. Additional amenities include a private betting parlor, private bar and private restrooms. During races, guests have access to trackside viewing, offering unparalleled, up close and personal views of the horses and jockeys.

Despite the challenges faced in updating such an old venue, the interior design aimed to overcome the funky geometries of the original architecture by incorporating the historic details and paying homage to the original Jockey Club. We exposed historic elements such as steel structure, original brickwork, and decorative masonry elements.
Custom millwork, antique mirrors, custom brass elements and custom wool carpets are used throughout the premium spaces.

The Churchill Downs Paddock redesign brings a bold new energy to the heart of the historic property while celebrating its iconic twin spires at its centerpiece.
