Steven Katich is a lifelong baseball fan. In 1982 (only a few years before his headshot was taken!), as a twenty-nine year old attorney in Denver, he met an upstart Colorado State Legislator named Federico Pena, who had decided, against all odds, to run for Mayor… Pena was 35. Katich joined Pena’s campaign and at one point casually said to him, “I think you should make getting a Major League Baseball team an economic development issue.” His response was, “Great idea. Write a position paper and let’s do it.” And while many other issues led Pena to his surprise victory – and in the process becoming Denver’s first Hispanic Mayor – this one certainly resonated.
After his inauguration in 1983, Katich and Pena immediately formed the Denver Baseball Commission (“DBC”). Katich left the practice of law to become its executive director. The DBC completed its work when the City of Denver was awarded a franchise on July 5, 1991. The Rockies began play in 1993.
Katich has worked as a consultant on many of Denver’s other transformational public infrastructure projects, including Denver International Airport, the Colorado Convention Center, Coors Field and Ball Arena. His clients have included the Denver Broncos and Ascent Entertainment (owners of the Nuggets and Avalanche prior to Kroenke Sports). Since 2002, he has served as a diplomat as Honorary Consul in Colorado for the Republic of Serbia. He is President of Steven Katich Consulting Group.
